Creating your first library

What a library is

A library is a single, self-contained folder that Brolla creates for you on your drive. It holds everything for one collection of b-roll: your clips, their thumbnails, and a small database that keeps track of names, tags and notes. Because it’s all in one folder, you can move it, copy it, or back it up just like any other folder.

Create a new library

When you open Brolla you’ll see Welcome to Brolla — “Archive and reuse your b-roll. Start by creating a library or opening an existing one.” Under Create a new library, type a name in the field (for example, the placeholder suggests “Travel B-roll 2026”), then click Choose location & create.

Brolla will ask you to pick a folder on your drive — internal or external — and it then makes a self-contained library folder there. Choose a spot you’ll remember and that has room to grow.

Open an existing library

Already have a library, perhaps on an external drive? Under Open an existing library, click Open library folder… and point Brolla at the folder it created earlier. You can also use Recent Libraries to jump back to one you used before, or Open another library to switch.

The free plan limit

On the Free plan you can keep one library with up to 50 assets. When you reach it you’ll see “Free plan full (50 assets) — activate a license to add more.” Click Upgrade whenever you’re ready for more space.
